Start
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace; The Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried: he descended into hell; the third day he arose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty: from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins. The resurrection of the body. And life everlasting. Amen.
V. O Lord, open thou my lips.
R. And my mouth shall declare thy praise.
V. O God, come to my assistance;
R. O Lord, make haste to help me.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos, quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam: quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.
Ant.

Ant. Veníte adorémus.
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi; Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus jurávi in ira mea; Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Invitatory {Antiphona from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For in his hand are all the ends of the earth: and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us worship.

Hymnus {ex Commune aut Festo}
Iste Confessor Dómini coléntes,
Quem pie laudant pópuli per orbem,
Hac die lætus meruit supremos
Laudis honores.

Qui pius, prudens, humilis, pudicus,
Sobriam duxit sine labe vitam,
Donec humanos animávit auræ
Spíritus artus.

Cujus ob præstans meritum, frequenter,
Ægra quæ passim jacuere membra,
Viribus morbi domitis, salúti
Restituúntur.

Noster hinc illi chorus obsequentem
Concinit laudem celebresque palmas,
Ut piis ejus precibus juvemur
Omne per ævum.

Sit salus illi, decus atque virtus,
Qui, super cæli solio coruscans,
Totius mundi seriem gubernat,
Trinus et unus.
Amen.
Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
This the confessor of the Lord, whose triumph
Now all the faithful celebrate, with gladness
On this feast day year by year receiveth
Merited honors.

Saintly and prudent, modest in behaviour,
Peaceful and sober, chaste was he, and lowly.
While that life's vigour, coursing through his members,
Quickened his being.

Sick ones of old time, to his tomb resorting,
Sorely by ailments manifold afflicted,
Oft-times have welcomed health and strength returning,
At his petition.

Whence we in chorus gladly do him honour,
Chanting his praises with devout affection,
That in his merits we may have a portion,
Now and forever.

His be the glory, power and salvation,
Who over all things reigneth in the highest,
Earth's mighty fabric ruling and directing,
Onely and Trinal.
Amen.

17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak to them all that I command thee. Be not afraid at their presence for I will make thee not to fear their countenance.
18 For behold I have made thee this day a fortified city, and a pillar of iron, and a wall of brass, over all the land, to the kings of Juda, to the princes thereof, and to the priests, and to the people of the land.

Nocturn II.
Ant. Great is the Lord
Psalm 47 [4]
47:1 Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised * in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
47:2 With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded, * on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
47:3 In her houses shall God be known, * when he shall protect her.
47:4 For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves: * they gathered together.
47:5 So they saw, and they wondered, they were troubled, they were moved: * trembling took hold of them.
47:6 There were pains as of a woman in labour; * with a vehement wind thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.
47:7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God hath founded it for ever.
47:8 We have received thy mercy, O God, * in the midst of thy temple.
47:9 According to thy name, O God, so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: * thy right hand is full of justice.
47:10 Let mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Juda be glad; * because of thy judgments, O Lord.
47:11 Surround Sion, and encompass her: * tell ye in her towers.
47:12 Set your hearts on her strength; and distribute her houses, * that ye may relate it in another generation.
47:13 For this is God, our God unto eternity, and for ever and ever: * he shall rule us for evermore.

48:3 Os meum loquétur sapiéntiam: * et meditátio cordis mei prudéntiam.
48:4 Inclinábo in parábolam aurem meam: * apériam in psaltério propositiónem meam.

48:2 All you that are earthborn, and you sons of men: * both rich and poor together.
48:3 My mouth shall speak wisdom: * and the meditation of my heart understanding
48:4 I will incline my ear to a parable; * I will open my proposition on the psaltery.
48:5 Why shall I fear in the evil day? * the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

Lectio 4

V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May God the Father Omnipotent, be to us merciful and clement. Amen.

Reading 4
This John was born at Capistrano, in the Abruzzi. He was educated at Perugia, and became so expert in letters, both sacred and profane, that on account of his eminent knowledge of law, Ladislaus, King of Naples, set him over several cities. He was seeking in righteousness to bring the affairs of these places out of trouble into peace, when he himself was kidnapped and put in chains. From this captivity he marvellously escaped, and then professed himself a Friar Minor under the rule of Francis of Assisi. Here he went forward in the study of divinity, and had as a teacher the holy Bernardine of Sienna, of whom he was one of the most marked followers, especially in spreading abroad the honour paid to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, and to the Mother of God. The bishopric of Aquila was offered to him, but he refused it. He was chiefly known by the hardship of his self-denial, and by the writings which he published in large numbers for the reform of manners.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him
* And gave him perpetual glory.
V. He went down with him into the pit, and left him not in bonds.
R. And gave him perpetual glory.
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Christus perpetuae det nobis gaudia vitae. Amen.

V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live. Amen.

Reading 5
He devoted himself without ceasing to the preaching of the Word of God, in the which work he travelled throughout nearly all Italy, and by the power of eloquence and of miracles not a few, he recalled souls almost countless into the path of salvation. Martin V. appointed him Inquisitor to stamp out the sect of the Fraticelli. Nicolas V. appointed him InquisitorGeneral in Italy against Judaism and Mohammadanism, and he brought many such misbelievers to believe in Christ. He did much good work in the affairs of the Eastern Church, and at the Council of Florence, wherein he shone like a sun, he brought back the Armenians to the Catholic church. The same Pope Nicolas V., at the request of the Emperor Frederick III., sent him into Germany as Nuncio of the Apostolic See, in order that he might bring back the heretics to the Catholic faith and the minds of the princes to peace and agreement. He did a wonderful work for God's glory during the six years that he laboured in Germany and other countries, and by his teaching of the truth and the striking evidence of his miracles brought back to the bosom of the Church almost countless numbers of Hussites, Adamites, Taborites, and Jews.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Lord loved him and beautified him He clothed him with a robe of glory
* And crowned him at the gates of Paradise.
V. The Lord hath put on him the breast-plate of faith, and hath adorned him.
R. And crowned him at the gates of Paradise.
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amoris accendat Deus in cordibus nostris. Amen.

Lectio 6

R. Quia te vidi justum coram me ex ómnibus géntibus.

Reading 6
It was mainly at the entreaty of John that Calistus III. proclaimed a Crusade, and John hastened about through Pannonia and other provinces, where by his words and his letters he so roused the minds of princes to that holy war, that in a short while seventy thousand Christian soldiers were enrolled. It was mainly through his advice and by his power that victory was gained at Belgrade, when one hundred and twenty thousand Turks were either slain or put to flight. The news of this victory reached Rome upon the sixth day of August, and Pope Calistus thereupon consecrated that day for ever to the solemn commemoration of the transfiguration of the Lord Christ. As John lay sick unto death at Illak, many princes came to see him, and he exhorted them to protect religion. He gave up his soul in holiness to God, (upon the 23rd day of October,) in the year of salvation 1456. God confirmed his glory by many miracles after his death, and when these had been duly proved Alexander VIII. enrolled his name with those of the saints in the year 1690, and two hundred years after his canonization Leo XIII. extended his Office and Mass to the whole Church.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. This is he which did according unto all that God commanded him; and God said unto him Enter thou into My rest

50:9 To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
50:10 Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.
50:11 Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
50:12 Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.
50:13 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
50:14 I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
50:15 Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
50:16 O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
50:17 For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
50:18 A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
50:19 Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
50:20 Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Luke 9:1-6

Homilia sancti Bonaventurae Episcopi
Expositio in cap. 9 Lucae

V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Gospel's holy lection be our safety and protection. Amen.

From the Holy Gospel according to Luke
Luke 9:1-6
At that time : Jesus called the twelve Apostles together and gave power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases. And so on.

Homily by St Buona- Ventura, (Cardinal) Bishop (of Albans,)
On Luke ix.
Apostles are so called as a mark of their authority, for this word Apostle signifieth sent, and they were sent out to preach, as it is written, (1 Cor. i. 17,) Christ sent me not to baptize but to preach the gospel. They were sent to preach not any small thing but a very great thing, even the Kingdom of God, whereby we may understand the teaching of the truth, as it is said, (Matth. xxi. 43,) The Kingdom of God should be taken from you and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. The Kingdom of God may also be understood to signify the grace of the Holy Ghost, as it is written, Rom. xiv. 17, The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost; as also it was said, Luke xvii. 21, The Kingdom of God is within you. The Kingdom of God may also be understood to signify eternal glory, as it is said, John iii. 5, Amen, I say unto thee, except a man be born again of water and of the Holy Ghost he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them
V. Behold a man without blame, a worshipper of God in truth, keeping himself clean from every evil work, and abiding still in his innocency.
R. May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Amen.

Lectio 8
Omnibus his modis Apostoli sunt missi praedicare regnum Dei, scilicet veram doctrinam, divinam gratiam, et aeternam gloriam. Et quia propter auctoritatem praedicationis concesserat potestatem curationis, ideo subdit: Et sanare infirmos; scilicet misit ad confirmationem veritatis praedicatae secundum illud: Illi autem profecti, praedicaverunt ubique, Domino cooperante et sermonem confirmante sequentibus signis. Unde signum missionis spiritualis ad praedicandum est sanatio audientium a morbis vitiorum.
V. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
R. Deo grátias.

R. Sint lumbi vestri præcincti, et lucernæ ardentes in mánibus vestris
* Et vos símiles homínibus exspectantibus dóminum suum, quando revertatur a núptiis.
V. Vigiláte ergo, quia nescitis qua hora Dóminus vester ventúrus sit.
R. Et vos símiles homínibus exspectantibus dóminum suum, quando revertatur a núptiis.
V. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
R. Et vos símiles homínibus exspectantibus dóminum suum, quando revertatur a núptiis.
V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. He whose feast-day we are keeping, be our Advocate with God. Amen.

Reading 8
The Apostles were sent to preach the Kingdom of God in all these three senses, that is to say, as the true teaching, as the grace of God, and as eternal glory. In order to invest their teaching with authority He gave them the power to cure diseases, whence where it is written And He sent them to preach the Kingdom of God it is also said And to heal the sick. This power He gave in order to confirm the truth of their preaching, as it is written, Mark xvi. 20, And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the Word with signs following. The sign that a preacher is indeed sent forth by the Spirit of God is that they that hear him should be cured of the disease of sin.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning,
* And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.
V. Watch, therefore, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
R. And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding.
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Per evangelica dicta, deleantur nostra delicta. Amen.

John 10:22-38

Homilia sancti Augustini Episcopi.
Tractatus 48. in Joannem, circa init.
Encaenia festivitas erat dedicationis templi. Graece enim caenon dicitur novum. Quandocumque novum aliquid fuerit dedicatum, encaenia vocantur.

Commemoration of the day
Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John
John 10:22-38
In that time it was the feast of the dedication at Jerusalem: and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch. And so on.

Homily by St Austin, Bishop of H ippo.
42th Tract on John.
The Greek word Enkainia, used by the Evangelist, signifieth the Feast of the Dedication of the Temple. The derivation thereof is kainon, which is, being interpreted, new; and the Dedication of anything new is thence called Enkainia. The use of this word is still preserved among ourselves; if any man put on his new coat for the first time we say that he enkainiateth. It was the use of the Jews to keep solemn holiday upon the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Temple, and this was the Feast-day which was being observed when the Lord spake the words which have been read.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

Te Deum
We praise thee, O God, * we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, * the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud, * the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim * continually do cry.

(bow head) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Sabaoth;

Heaven and earth are full * of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs * praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee;
The Father, * of an infinite Majesty.
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting * Son of the Father.

During the following verse all make a profound bow:
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.

Kneel for the following verse
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee;

During the following verse, by local custom, all make a profound bow.
And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandae sint.
