Ant.

Ant. Nolíte obduráre corda vestra.
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi; Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus iurávi in ira mea; Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. Do not harden your heart.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. Do not harden your heart.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart.
omit Glory be

Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle
Sing the last, the dread affray;
O'er the cross, the victor's trophy,
Sound the high triumphal lay:
Tell how Christ, the world's Redeemer,
As a victim won the day.

God, his Maker, sorely grieving
That the first-made Adam fell,
When he ate the fruit of sorrow,
Whose reward was death and hell,
Noted then this wood, the ruin
Of the ancient wood to quell.

For the work of our salvation
Needs would have his order so,
And the multiform deceiver's
Art by art would overthrow,
And from thence would bring the med'cine
Whence the insult of the foe.

Wherefore, when the sacred fullness
Of the appointed time was come,
This world's Maker left his Father,
Sent the heav'nly mansion from,
And proceeded, God Incarnate,
Of the Virgin's holy womb.

Weeps the infant in the manger
That in Bethlehem's stable stands;
And his limbs the Virgin Mother
Doth compose in swaddling bands,
Meetly thus in linen folding
Of her God the feet and hands.

To the Trinity be glory
Everlasting, as is meet;
Equal to the Father, equal
To the Son, and Paraclete:
Trinal Unity, whose praises
All created things repeat.
Amen.

Psalm 48 [4]
48:2 Hear these things, all ye nations: * give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.
48:3 All you that are earthborn, and you sons of men: * both rich and poor together.
48:4 My mouth shall speak wisdom: * and the meditation of my heart understanding

48:8 No brother can redeem, nor shall man redeem: * he shall not give to God his ransom,
48:9 Nor the price of the redemption of his soul: * and shall labour for ever, and shall still live unto the end.
48:11 He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: * the senseless and the fool shall perish together:
48:11 And they shall leave their riches to strangers: * and their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever.
48:12 Their dwelling places to all generations: * they have called their lands by their names.
48:13 And man when he was in honour did not understand; * he is compared to senseless beasts, and is become like to them.
48:14 This way of theirs is a stumbling block to them: * and afterwards they shall delight in their mouth.
48:15 They are laid in hell like sheep: * death shall feed upon them.
48:15 And the just shall have dominion over them in the morning; * and their help shall decay in hell from their glory.
48:16 But God will redeem my soul from the hand of hell, * when he shall receive me.
48:17 Be not thou afraid, when a man shall be made rich, * and when the glory of his house shall be increased.
48:18 For when he shall die he shall take nothing away; * nor shall his glory descend with him.
48:19 For in his lifetime his soul will be blessed: * and he will praise thee when thou shalt do well to him.

Ant. The God of gods * the Lord hath spoken.
Psalm 49 [5]
49:1 The God of gods, the Lord hath spoken: * and he hath called the earth.
49:1 From the rising of the sun, to the going down thereof: * out of Sion the loveliness of his beauty.
49:3 God shall come manifestly: our God shall come, * and shall not keep silence.
49:3 A fire shall burn before him: * and a mighty tempest shall be round about
49:4 He shall call heaven from above, * and the earth, to judge his people.
49:5 Gather ye together his saints to him: * who set his covenant before sacrifices.
49:6 And the heavens shall declare his justice: * for God is judge.
49:7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak: O Israel, and I will testify to thee: * I am God, thy God.
49:8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices: * and thy burnt offerings are always in my sight.
49:9 I will not take calves out of thy house: * nor he goats out of thy flocks.
49:10 For all the beasts of the woods are mine: * the cattle on the hills, and the oxen.
49:11 I know all the fowls of the air: * and with me is the beauty of the field.
49:12 If I should be hungry, I would not tell thee: * for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
49:13 Shall I eat the flesh of bullocks? * or shall I drink the blood of goats?
49:14 Offer to God the sacrifice of praise: * and pay thy vows to the most High.
49:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: * I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
49:16 But to the sinner God hath said: * Why dost thou declare my justices, and take my covenant in thy mouth?
49:17 Seeing thou hast hated discipline: * and hast cast my words behind thee.
49:18 If thou didst see a thief thou didst run with him: * and with adulterers thou hast been a partaker.
49:19 Thy mouth hath abounded with evil, * and thy tongue framed deceits.
49:20 Sitting thou didst speak against thy brother, and didst lay a scandal against thy mother’s son: * these things hast thou done, and I was silent.
49:21 Thou thoughtest unjustly that I should be like to thee: * but I will reprove thee, and set before thy face.
49:22 Understand these things, you that forget God; * lest he snatch you away, and there be none to deliver you.
49:23 The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me: * and there is the way by which I will shew him the salvation of God.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 51 [6]
51:3 Why dost thou glory in malice, * thou that art mighty in iniquity?
51:4 All the day long thy tongue hath devised injustice: * as a sharp razor, thou hast wrought deceit.
51:5 Thou hast loved malice more than goodness: * and iniquity rather than to speak righteousness.
51:6 Thou hast loved all the words of ruin, * O deceitful tongue.
51:7 Therefore will God destroy thee for ever: * he will pluck thee out, and remove thee from thy dwelling place: and thy root out of the land of the living.
51:8 The just shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, and say: * Behold the man that made not God his helper:
51:9 But trusted in the abundance of his riches: * and prevailed in his vanity.
51:10 But I, as a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, * have hoped in the mercy of God for ever, yea for ever and ever.
51:11 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: * and I will wait on thy name, for it is good in the sight of thy saints.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

℟. Et a córnibus unicórnium humilitátem meam.
℣. From the lion's mouth, O Lord, save me.
℟. And my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.
Absolutio. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
℣. And lead us not into temptation:
℟. But deliver us from evil.

Ier 11:15-20
Numquid carnes sanctæ áuferent a te malítias tuas, in quibus gloriáta es?
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

Lesson from the book of Jeremias
Jer 11:15-20
15 What is the meaning that my beloved hath wrought much wickedness in my house? shall the holy flesh take away from thee thy crimes, in which thou hast boasted?
16 The Lord called thy name, a plentiful olive tree, fair, fruitful, and beautiful: at the noise of a word, a great fire was kindled in it and the branches thereof are burnt.
17 And the Lord of hosts that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee: for the evils of the house of Israel, and the house of Juda, which they have done to themselves, to provoke me, offering sacrifice to Baalim.
18 But thou, O Lord, hast shewn me, and I have known: then thou shewedst me their doings.
19 And I was as a meek lamb, that is carried to be a victim: and I knew not that they had devised counsels against me, saying: Let us put wood on his bread, and cut him off from the land of the living, and let his name be remembered no more.
20 But thou, O Lord of Sabaoth, who judgest justly, and triest the reins and hearts, let me see thy revenge on them: for to thee I have revealed my cause.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I have suffered defaming and fear from them that were my familiars they watched for my halting, saying Let us entice him, and prevail against him. But Thou, O Lord, art with me, as a Mighty Terrible One.
* Let them stumble into everlasting confusion, that I may see thy vengeance upon them, for unto thee have I opened my cause.
℣. O Lord, plead Thou the cause of my soul, Thou That art the Redeemer of my life.
℟. Let them stumble into everlasting confusion, that I may see thy vengeance upon them, for unto thee have I opened my cause.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ. Amen.

Ier 12:1-4
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Deus Israël, propter te sustínui impropérium, opéruit reveréntia fáciem meam, extráneus factus sum frátribus meis, et hospes fíliis matris meæ:
* Quóniam zelus domus tuæ comédit me.
℣. Inténde ánimæ meæ, et líbera eam, propter inimícos meos éripe me.
℟. Quóniam zelus domus tuæ comédit me.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live. Amen.

Jer 12:1-4
1 Thou indeed, O Lord, art just, if I plead with thee, but yet I will speak what is just to thee: Why doth the way of the wicked prosper: why is it well with all them that transgress, and do wickedly?
2 Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they prosper and bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.
3 And thou, O Lord, hast known me, thou hast seen me, and proved my heart with thee: gather them together as sheep for a sacrifice, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herb of every field wither for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? The beasts and the birds are consumed: because they have said: He shall not see our last end.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. For thy sake, O God of Israel, I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face; I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.
* For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
℣. Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it; deliver me, because of mine enemies.
℟. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris. Amen.

9 Numquid avis díscolor heréditas mea mihi? numquid avis tincta per totum? Veníte, congregámini, omnes béstiæ terræ, properáte ad devorándum.
10 Pastóres multi demolíti sunt víneam meam, conculcavérunt partem meam: dedérunt portiónem meam desiderábilem in desértum solitúdinis.
11 Posuérunt eam in dissipatiónem, luxítque super me: desolatióne desoláta est omnis terra, quia nullus est qui recógitet corde.

Jer 12:7-11
7 I have forsaken my house, I have left my inheritance: I have given my dear soul into the land of her enemies.
8 My inheritance is become to me as a lion in the wood: it hath cried out against me, therefore have I hated it.
9 Is my inheritance to me as a speckled bird? Is it as a bird died throughout? come ye, assemble yourselves, all the beasts of the earth, make haste to devour.
10 Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot: they have changed my delightful portion into a desolate wilderness.
11 They have laid it waste, and it hath mourned for me. With desolation is all the land made desolate; because there is none that considereth in the heart.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The congregation of the people hath compassed me about, but I rewarded no evil unto him that rewarded evil unto me.
* O Lord, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just.
℣. Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.
℟. O Lord, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just.

52:6 Deum non invocavérunt: * illic trepidavérunt timóre, ubi non erat timor.
52:6 Quóniam Deus dissipávit ossa eórum qui homínibus placent: * confúsi sunt, quóniam Deus sprevit eos.

52:2 They are corrupted, and become abominable in iniquities: * there is none that doth good.
52:3 God looked down from heaven on the children of men: * to see if there were any that did understand, or did seek God.
52:4 All have gone aside, they are become unprofitable together, * there is none that doth good, no not one.
52:5 Shall not all the workers of iniquity know, * who eat up my people as they eat bread?
52:6 They have not called upon God: * there have they trembled for fear, where there was no fear.
52:6 For God hath scattered the bones of them that please men: * they have been confounded, because God hath despised them.

53:6 For behold God is my helper: * and the Lord is the protector of my soul.
53:7 Turn back the evils upon my enemies; * and cut them off in thy truth.
53:8 I will freely sacrifice to thee, * and will give praise, O God, to thy name: because it is good:

54:7 And I said: Who will give me wings like a dove, * and I will fly and be at rest?
54:8 Lo, I have gone far off flying away; * and I abode in the wilderness.
54:9 I waited for him that hath saved me * from pusillanimity of spirit, and a storm.
54:10 Cast down, O Lord, and divide their tongues; * for I have seen iniquity and contradiction in the city.
54:11 Day and night shall iniquity surround it upon its walls: * and in the midst thereof are labour, and injustice.
54:12 And usury and deceit * have not departed from its streets.
54:13 For if my enemy had reviled me, * I would verily have borne with it.

55:6 All the day long they detested my words: * all their thoughts were against me unto evil.
55:7 They will dwell and hide themselves: * they will watch my heel.
55:8 As they have waited for my soul, for nothing shalt thou save them: * in thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces.
55:9 O God, I have declared to thee my life: * thou hast set my tears in thy sight,
55:9 As also in thy promise. * Then shall my enemies be turned back.
55:10 In what day soever I shall call upon thee, * behold I know thou art my God.

57:10 Priúsquam intellégerent spinæ vestræ rhamnum: * sicut vivéntes, sic in ira absórbet eos.
57:11 Lætábitur iustus cum víderit vindíctam: * manus suas lavábit in sánguine peccatóris.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Ant. Judge right things, * ye sons of men.
Psalm 57 [11]
57:2 If in very deed you speak justice: * judge right things, ye sons of men.
57:3 For in your heart you work iniquity: * your hands forge injustice in the earth.
57:4 The wicked are alienated from the womb; they have gone astray from the womb: * they have spoken false things.
57:5 Their madness is according to the likeness of a serpent: * like the deaf asp that stoppeth her ears:
57:6 Which will not hear the voice of the charmers; * nor of the wizard that charmeth wisely.
57:7 God shall break in pieces their teeth in their mouth: * the Lord shall break the grinders of the lions.
57:8 They shall come to nothing, like water running down; * he hath bent his bow till they be weakened.
57:9 Like wax that melteth they shall be taken away: * fire hath fallen on them, and they shall not see the sun.
57:10 Before your thorns could know the brier; he swalloweth them up, * as alive, in his wrath.
57:11 The just shall rejoice when he shall see the revenge: * he shall wash his hands in the blood of the sinner.
57:12 And man shall say: If indeed there be fruit to the just: * there is indeed a God that judgeth them on the earth.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 58 [12]
58:2 Éripe me de inimícis meis, Deus meus: * et ab insurgéntibus in me líbera me.
58:3 Éripe me de operántibus iniquitátem: * et de viris sánguinum salva me.
58:4 Quia ecce cepérunt ánimam meam: * irruérunt in me fortes.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Ant. Iusta iudicáte fílii hóminum.
Psalm 58 [12]
58:2 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; * and defend me from them that rise up against me.
58:3 Deliver me from them that work iniquity, * and save me from bloody men.
58:4 For behold they have caught my soul: * the mighty have rushed in upon me:
58:5 Neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, O Lord: * without iniquity have I run, and directed my steps.
58:6 Rise up thou to meet me, and behold: * even thou, O Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel.
58:6 Attend to visit all the nations: * have no mercy on all them that work iniquity.
58:7 They shall return at evening, and shall suffer hunger like dogs: * and shall go round about the city.
58:8 Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: * for who, say they, hath heard us?
58:9 But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them: * thou shalt bring all the nations to nothing.
58:10 I will keep my strength to thee: for thou art my protector: * my God, his mercy shall prevent me.
58:12 God shall let me see over my enemies: slay them not, * lest at any time my people forget.
58:12 And scatter them by thy power; * and bring them down, O Lord, my protector:
58:13 For the sin of their mouth, and the word of their lips: * and let them be taken in their pride.
58:13 And for their cursing and lying they shall be talked of, when they are consumed: * when they are consumed by thy wrath, and they shall be no more.
58:14 And they shall know that God will rule Jacob, * and all the ends of the earth.
58:15 They shall return at evening and shall suffer hunger like dogs: * and shall go round about the city.
58:16 They shall be scattered abroad to eat, * and shall murmur if they be not filled.
58:17 But I will sing thy strength: * and will extol thy mercy in the morning.
58:17 For thou art become my support, * and my refuge, in the day of my trouble.
58:18 Unto thee, O my helper, will I sing, for thou art God my defence: * my God my mercy.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. Judge right things, ye sons of men.

Oratio {ex Proprio de Tempore}
Kýrie, eléison. Christe, eléison. Kýrie, eléison.
« Pater Noster » dicitur secreto usque ad « Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: »
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:

Prayer {from the Proper of the season}
Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us.
"Our Father" is said silently until "And lead us not into temptation:".
℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.
℟. And let my cry come unto thee.
Let us pray.
O Almighty and everlasting God, give us grace so to use the solemn and mysterious memorial of the Lord's Suffering, that the same may be unto us a mean whereby worthily to win thy forgiveness.
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.

Skip the rest, unless praying Lauds separately.
