Invitatory {Antiphona from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For in his hand are all the ends of the earth: and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Confessors, * O come, let us worship, Alleluia.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hymnus {ex Commune aut Festo}
Iste Confessor Dómini coléntes,
Quem pie laudant pópuli per orbem,
Hac die lætus meruit beatas,
Scandere sedes.

Qui pius, prudens, humilis, pudicus,
Sobriam duxit sine labe vitam,
Donec humanos animávit auræ
Spíritus artus.

Cujus ob præstans meritum, frequenter,
Ægra quæ passim jacuere membra,
Viribus morbi domitis, salúti
Restituúntur.

Noster hinc illi chorus obsequentem
Concinit laudem celebresque palmas,
Ut piis ejus precibus juvemur
Omne per ævum.

Sit salus illi, decus atque virtus,
Qui, super cæli solio coruscans,
Totius mundi seriem gubernat,
Trinus et unus.
Amen.
Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
This the confessor of the Lord, whose triumph
Now all the faithful celebrate, with gladness
Erst on this feast-day merited to enter
Into his glory.

Saintly and prudent, modest in behaviour,
Peaceful and sober, chaste was he, and lowly.
While that life's vigour, coursing through his members,
Quickened his being.

Sick ones of old time, to his tomb resorting,
Sorely by ailments manifold afflicted,
Oft-times have welcomed health and strength returning,
At his petition.

Whence we in chorus gladly do him honour,
Chanting his praises with devout affection,
That in his merits we may have a portion,
Now and forever.

His be the glory, power and salvation,
Who over all things reigneth in the highest,
Earth's mighty fabric ruling and directing,
Onely and Trinal.
Amen.

De Epistola beati Jacobi Apostoli.
Jas 2:14-17

Lesson from the letter of St James the Apostle
Jas 2:14-17
14 What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him?
15 And if a brother or sister be naked, and want daily food:
16 And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit?
17 So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. I will sing a new song unto thee, O God Alleluia.
* Upon a psaltery of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Lectio 2
Jas 2:18-22

* Et psallere, alleluia.

Reading 2
Jas 2:18-22
18 But some man will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without works; and I will show thee, by works, my faith.
19 Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect?
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord Alleluia
* And to sing praises Alleluia.

Lectio 3
Jas 2:23-26

* A Domino, alleluia, alleluia.

Reading 3
Jas 2:23-26
23 And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God.
24 Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only?
25 And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way?
26 For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. Let now the redeemed of the Lord Alleluia
* Say Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
V. Let them whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy, and gathered them out of the lands.

Psalm 47 [4]
47:1 Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised * in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
47:2 With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded, * on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
47:3 In her houses shall God be known, * when he shall protect her.
47:4 For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves: * they gathered together.
47:5 So they saw, and they wondered, they were troubled, they were moved: * trembling took hold of them.
47:6 There were pains as of a woman in labour; * with a vehement wind thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.
47:7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God hath founded it for ever.
47:8 We have received thy mercy, O God, * in the midst of thy temple.
47:9 According to thy name, O God, so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: * thy right hand is full of justice.
47:10 Let mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Juda be glad; * because of thy judgments, O Lord.
47:11 Surround Sion, and encompass her: * tell ye in her towers.

48:3 Os meum loquétur sapiéntiam: * et meditátio cordis mei prudéntiam.
48:4 Inclinábo in parábolam aurem meam: * apériam in psaltério propositiónem meam.
48:5 Cur timébo in die mala? * iníquitas calcánei mei circúmdabit me:
48:6 Qui confídunt in virtúte sua: * et in multitúdine divitiárum suárum gloriántur.
48:7 Frater non rédimit, rédimet homo: * non dabit Deo placatiónem suam.
48:8 Et prétium redemptiónis ánimæ suæ: * et laborábit in ætérnum, et vivet adhuc in finem.
48:9 Non vidébit intéritum, cum víderit sapiéntes moriéntes: * simul insípiens, et stultus períbunt.

48:3 My mouth shall speak wisdom: * and the meditation of my heart understanding
48:4 I will incline my ear to a parable; * I will open my proposition on the psaltery.
48:5 Why shall I fear in the evil day? * the iniquity of my heel shall encompass me.

48:9 He shall not see destruction, when he shall see the wise dying: * the senseless and the fool shall perish together:
48:10 And they shall leave their riches to strangers: * and their sepulchres shall be their houses for ever.

Reading 4
Gregory, to whom, is commonly given, on account of his extraordinary depth of sacred learning, the title of "the Divine," was a noble Cappadocian, born at Nazianzus in that country, and educated at Athens along with St Basil, with whom likewise, when they had acquired knowledge in divers branches of earthly learning, he gave himself up to learn the things of God. This they did for some years in a Monastery, framing their opinions, not out of their own heads, but according to the interpretation arrived at by the wisdom and decision of the antients. They were both distinguished by power of doctrine and holiness of life they were both called to the duty of preaching the Gospel of truth and through the Gospel they both begat many sons unto Christ.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. I have found David My servant, with My holy oil have I anointed him
* For My hand shall help him. Alleluia
V. The enemy shall prevail nothing against him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
R. For My hand shall help him. Alleluia
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Christus perpetuae det nobis gaudia vitae. Amen.

Lectio 5

V. Inveni David servum meum, oleo sancto meo unxi eum.
R. Manus enim mea auxiliabitur ei, alleluia.
V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live. Amen.

Reading 5
Gregory after a while returned home. He was first made Bishop of Sasima, and afterwards administered the Church at Nazianzus. Then he was called to rule the Church of Constantinople. That city, which he found reeking with heresy, he purged, and brought again to the Catholic faith. But this, which deserved for him the warmest love of all men, raised up many enemies. Among the Bishops themselves there was a great party against him, and to still their contentions, he, of his own free will, gave up his see, saying with the Prophet Jonah "Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea so shall the sea be calm unto you for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you," i. 12. So he went his way back again to Nazianzus, and when he had seen that Eulalius was set over that Church, he gave himself up altogether to think and write concerning the things of God.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of My people
* For My hand shall help him. Alleluia
V. I have found David My servant, with My holy oil have I anointed him.
R. For My hand shall help him. Alleluia
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amoris accendat Deus in cordibus nostris. Amen.

Lectio 6

R. Ipse intercedat pro peccatis omnium populorum, alleluia.
V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Spirit's fire Divine in our hearts enkindled shine. Amen.

Reading 6
He wrote much, both in prose and verse, with wonderful godliness and eloquence. According to the judgment of learned and holy men, there is nothing in his writings which anywhere strays from the line of true godliness and Catholic truth, and not a single word which any one can justly call in doubt. He was one of the latest champions of the doctrine that the Son is of one substance with the Father. No one has ever won greater praise for goodness of life, neither was any man more earnest in prayer. During the reign of the Emperor Theodosius he dwelt in the country after the manner of a monk, and unceasingly taken up with writing and reading, until, in a good old age, he laid down his earthly, to enter on an heavenly life.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and the whole earth is full of his teaching

In illo tempore: Dixit Jesus discipulis suis: Vos estis sal terrae. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? Et reliqua.

Homilia sancti Augustini Episcopi
Lib. 1 de Sermone Domini in monte, cap. 6

Reading 7
From the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 5:13-19
In that time: Jesus said to his diciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? And so on.

Homily of St. Augustine, Bishop
Lib. 1 de Sermone Domini in monte, cap. 6
The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any temporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh : If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be : If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. The Lord loved him and beautified him He clothed him with a robe of glory
* And crowned him at the gates of Paradise. Alleluia
V. The Lord hath put on him the breast-plate of faith, and hath adorned him.
R. And crowned him at the gates of Paradise. Alleluia
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio.

V. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. He whose feast-day we are keeping, be our Advocate with God. Amen.

Reading 8
Those that should be the salt of the earth, but have lost their savour, are thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. But no one that suffereth persecution is truly said to be trodden under foot of men. Rather, that one is truly trodden under foot of men who through fear of persecution hath lost the savour of righteousness. For no one can be trodden upon, unless he be beneath him which treadeth upon him. And certainly no one who hath his heart in heaven, no matter how grievously he doth suffer in his body on earth, is rightly said to be beneath anyone who misuseth him.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

R. In the midst of the congregation did the Lord open his mouth.
* And filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. Alleluia
V. He made him rich with joy and gladness.
R. And filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. Alleluia
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. And filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding. Alleluia
V. Jube, domne, benedicere.
Benedictio. Ad societatem civium supernorum perducat nos Rex Angelorum. Amen.

Lectio 9
Vos estis lumen mundi. Quomodo dixit superius sal terrae, sic nunc dicit lumen mundi.

Reading 9
Ye are the light of the world. And we are to understand the word World in the same sense as the word Earth when he spoke above of the salt of the earth, that is, not that earth whereupon we walk with our bodily feet, but the men which dwell upon the earth ; in other words, sinners, for the sweetening and correction of whose corruption, the Lord hath sent his Apostles, as it were, as so much salt. And so by the world we are to understand, not the heaven and the earth, but the men who are in the world and love the world, for the enlightening of whom the Apostles have been sent. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid : that is, what is founded upon the heights of righteousness, whereof the mountain upon which the Lord gave this discourse was itself a figure, is magnificent in the eyes of all men.
V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
R. Thanks be to God.

Te Deum
We praise thee, O God, * we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, * the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud, * the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim * continually do cry.

(bow head) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Sabaoth;

Heaven and earth are full * of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs * praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee;
The Father, * of an infinite Majesty.
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting * Son of the Father.

During the following verse all make a profound bow:
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.

Kneel for the following verse
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee;

During the following verse, by local custom, all make a profound bow.
And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
Reliqua omittuntur, nisi Laudes separandae sint.
