Ant.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Martyrs, * O come, let us worship.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us worship.

Et sústulit viríliter,
Fundénsque pro te sánguinem,
Ætérna dona póssidet.

Ob hoc precátu súpplici
Te póscimus, piíssime;
In hoc triúmpho Mártyris
Dimítte noxam sérvulis.

Hymn {from the Common or Feast}
O God, of those that fought thy fight,
Portion, and prize, and crown of light,
Break every bond of sin and shame
As now we praise thy martyr's name.

He recked not of the world's allure,
But sin and pomp of sin forswore:
Knew all their gall, and passed them by,
And reached the throne prepared on high.

Bravely the course of pain he ran,
And bare his torments as a man:
For love of thee his blood outpoured,
And thus obtained the great reward.

With humble voice and suppliant word
We pray thee therefore, holy Lord,
While we thy martyr's feast-day keep,
Forgive thy loved and erring sheep.

Glory and praise for aye be done
To God the Father, and the Son,
And Holy Ghost, who reign on high,
One God, to all eternity.
Amen.

34:2 Take hold of arms and shield: * and rise up to help me.
34:3 Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me: * say to my soul: I am thy salvation.

34:4 Let them be turned back and be confounded * that devise against me.
34:5 Let them become as dust before the wind: * and let the Angel of the Lord straiten them.
34:6 Let their way become dark and slippery; * and let the Angel of the Lord pursue them.
34:7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction: * without cause they have upbraided my soul.
34:8 Let the snare which he knoweth not come upon him: and let the net which he hath hidden catch him: * and into that very snare let them fall.
34:9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; * and shall be delighted in his salvation.

1 Sam 6:6-10
6 Why do you harden your hearts, as Egypt and Pharao hardened their hearts? did not he, after he was struck, then let them go, and they departed?
7 Now therefore take and make a new cart: and two kine that have calved, on which there hath come no yoke, tie to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.
8 And you shall take the ark of the Lord, and lay it on the cart, and the vessels of gold, which you have paid him for sin, you shall put into a little box, at the side thereof: and send it away that it may go.
9 And you shall look: and if it go up by the way of his own coasts towards Bethsames, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, we shall know that it is not his hand hath touched us, but it hath happened by chance.
10 They did therefore in this manner.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. And it came to pass when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind
* Elisha cried, and said: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.
℣. And as they still went on, and talked, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
℟. Elisha cried, and said: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.

13 Now the Bethsamites were reaping wheat in the valley: and lifting up their eyes they saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14 And the cart came into the field of Josue a Bethsamite, and stood there. And there was a great stone, and they cut in pieces the wood of the cart, and laid the kine upon it a holocaust to the Lord.

36:14 The wicked have drawn out the sword: * they have bent their bow.

Winfried, afterwards called Boniface, was an Englishman, and born in England, towards the end of the seventh century. From his very childhood, he turned away from the world, and set his heart upon becoming a monk. His father tried in vain to turn him from his wishes by the beguilements of the world, and he entered a Monastery, where the Blessed Wolphard instructed him in all godliness and diverse kinds of learning. At the age of twenty-nine years he was ordained Priest, and became an unwearied preacher of the Word of God, wherein he had a gift which he used with great gain of souls. Nevertheless, his great desire was to spread the kingdom of Christ, and he continually bewailed the vast number of savages who were plunged in the darkness of ignorance and were the servants of the devil. This zealous love of souls increased in him in intensity day by day, till nothing would serve him, but, having implored the blessing of God by tears and prayers, and obtained authority from the head of his monastery, to set forth for the coast of Germany.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him,
* And gave him perpetual glory.
℣. He went down with him into the pit, and left him not in bonds.
℟. And gave him perpetual glory.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ. Amen.

In Germániam diréctus, Thuríngiæ Saxoniæque pópulis Christum annuntiávit.

Reading 5
He set sail from England with two companions in the year 716 and reached the town of Dorestadt in Friesland. A great war being then raging between Radbod, King of the Frieslanders, and Charles Martel, Winfrid preached the Gospel in vain. He went back to England, and betook himself again to his Monastery, whereof he was, against his own will, chosen to be the head. After two years he obtained the consent of the Bishop of Winchester to resign his office, and in 719 went to Rome, to seek an Apostolic commission to preach to the heathen. When he arrived at the city he was courteously welcomed by Gregory II., who changed his name from Winfrid to Boniface. He departed thence to Germany, and preached Christ to the tribes in Thuringia and Saxony. Radbod, King of Friesland, who bitterly hated the Christian name, being dead, Boniface went a second time among the Frieslanders, and there, with his comrade St. Willibrord, preached the Gospel for three years with so much fruit, that the idols were hewn down, and countless churches arose to the true God.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Lord, Thou hast given him his heart's desire.
* And hast not withholden the request of his lips.
℣. For Thou hast prevented him with the blessings of sweetness: Thou hast set a crown of precious stones upon his head.
℟. And hast not withholden the request of his lips.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris. Amen.

A Gregório Pontífice Romam evocátus, post insígnem fídei professiónem epíscopus consecrátur. Tanta propter mérita Bonifátius a Gregório tértio ad dignitátem archiepiscopálem evéhitur, et tértio Romam proféctus a summo Pontífice Sedis apostólicæ legátus constitúitur. A Zacharía Papa creátus Mogúntius archiepíscopus, ipso Pontífice jubénte, Pipínum in regem Francórum unxit. Post mortem sancti Willibrórdi Ultrajecténsem ecclésiam gubernándum suscépit, primo per Eóbanum, deínde per seípsum, dum ab ecclésia Moguntína absolútus Ultrajécti resédit. ℟. Et corónam pulchritúdinis pósuit super caput ejus.

Reading 6
Willibrord urged upon him to take the office of a Bishop, but he deferred to seek it, that he might the more instantly toil for the salvation of the unbelievers. Advancing into Germany, he reclaimed thousands of the Hessians from devil-worship. Pope Gregory sent for him to Rome, whither he came in 723, and after hearing a noble profession of his faith, consecrated him a Bishop. He again returned to Germany, and thoroughly purged Hesse and Thuringia from all remains of idolatry. On account of such great works Gregory III. advanced Boniface to the dignity of an Archbishop, and on the occasion of a third journey to Rome, in 738, he was invested by the Sovereign Pontiff with the powers of Legate of the Apostolic See. As such, he founded (the) four Bishoprics (of Erfurt, Paderborn, Wurtzburg, and Eichstadt,) and held diverse Synods, among which is especially to be remembered that of Lessines, held in Belgium, in the diocese of Cambrai, wherein he made his strongest endeavours to spread the Faith among the Belgians. By Pope Zacharias, he was named Archbishop of Maintz, and by command of the same Pope, he anointed Pepin to be King of the Franks. After the death of St. Willibrord, he undertook the government of the Church of Utrecht, at first through Eoban but he afterwards was released from the care of the Church of Maintz and established his see at Utrecht. The Frieslanders having again fallen back into idolatry, he once more betook himself to preach the Gospel among them, and while he was busied in this duty, he grasped the crown of martyrdom, being murdered by some ungodly savages, along with his fellow-Bishop Eoban, and many others, in a bloody massacre near the River Born, on the th day of June, in the year of our Lord 755, and of his own age the 75th. In accordance with the wish expressed by himself during life the body of St. Boniface was carried to Maintz, and buried in the monastery of Fulda, of which he had been the founder, and where God has gloriously honoured it by the working of many signs and wonders. Pope Pius IX. ordered the Office and Mass in bis memory to be used throughout the whole Church.

℟. Thanks be to God.

38:9 Ab ómnibus iniquitátibus meis érue me: * oppróbrium insipiénti dedísti me.
38:10 Obmútui, et non apérui os meum, quóniam tu fecísti: * ámove a me plagas tuas.
38:12 A fortitúdine manus tuæ ego deféci in increpatiónibus: * propter iniquitátem corripuísti hóminem.
38:12 Et tabéscere fecísti sicut aráneam ánimam ejus: * verúmtamen vane conturbátur omnis homo.

Psalm 38 [9]
38:2 I said: I will take heed to my ways: * that I sin not with my tongue.
38:2 I have set guard to my mouth, * when the sinner stood against me.
38:3 I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence from good things: * and my sorrow was renewed.
38:4 My heart grew hot within me: * and in my meditation a fire shall flame out.
38:5 I spoke with my tongue: * O Lord, make me know my end.
38:5 And what is the number of my days: * that I may know what is wanting to me.
38:6 Behold thou hast made my days measurable: * and my substance is as nothing before thee.
38:6 And indeed all things are vanity: * every man living.
38:7 Surely man passeth as an image: * yea, and he is disquieted in vain.
38:7 He storeth up: * and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things.
38:8 And now what is my hope? Is it not the Lord? * And my substance is with thee.
38:9 Deliver thou me from all my iniquities: * thou hast made me a reproach to the fool.
38:10 I was dumb, and I opened not my mouth, because thou hast done it: * remove thy scourges from me.
38:12 The strength of thy hand hath made me faint in rebukes: * thou hast corrected man for iniquity.
38:12 And thou hast made his soul to waste away like a spider: * surely in vain is any man disquieted.
38:13 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication: * give ear to my tears.
38:13 Be not silent: for I am a stranger with thee, * and a sojourner as all my fathers were.
38:14 O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, * and be no more.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. Remove, O Lord, thy scourges from me.
℣. Deus, ne síleas a me, remítte mihi.
℟. Quóniam íncola ego sum apud te et peregrínus.
℣. O Lord, be not thou silent, forgive me.
℟. For I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem:
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.
Absolutio. A vínculis peccatórum nostrórum absólvat nos omnípotens et miséricors Dóminus. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Matt 5:1-12

℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Coróna áurea super caput ejus,
* Expréssa signo sanctitátis, glória honóris, et opus fortitúdinis.
℣. Quóniam prævenísti eum in benedictiónibus dulcédinis, posuísti in cápite ejus corónam de lápide pretióso.
℟. Expréssa signo sanctitátis, glória honóris, et opus fortitúdinis.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Gospel's holy lection be our safety and protection. Amen.

Reading 7
From the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 5:1-12
At that time Jesus, seeing the multitudes, went up into a mountain, and, when He was set, His disciples came unto Him. And so on.

Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
Bk. i. on the Lord's Sermon.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. What fools then be they that seek God with their outward eyes, since it is in the heart that He is seen, as it is written elsewhere In simplicity of heart seek Him. Wisd. i. i. A simple heart is a pure heart. And even as we cannot see this earthly light, unless the eyes be open, so cannot God be seen, unless that be open which alone can perceive Him. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. The perfection of peace is the absence of contrariety, and the peacemakers are called the children of God because they offer no contrariety against the will of God. As beseemeth children, they have their Father's likeness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. A crown of gold upon his head,
* Wherein is engraved Holiness, an ornament of honour, a costly work.
℣. For Thou hast prevented him with the blessings of sweetness, Thou hast set a crown of precious stones upon his head.
℟. Wherein is engraved Holiness, an ornament of honour, a costly work.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio.

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. He whose feast-day we are keeping, be our Advocate with God. Amen.

Reading 8
They are peacemakers in themselves, who order all the movements of their own mind in obedience to reason, that is, to their intellect and soul, and so doing, and taming the lusts of the flesh, become a kingdom for God. In such kingdom all things are so ordered, that the chiefest and noblest part of man ruleth without contention over those lower things which we have in common with beasts. And just in the same way, must that nobler part of man, that is to say, intellect and reason, needs be put in subjection to what is above it, namely, Truth, the Only begotten Son of God. He only can rule well who hath learnt to obey. And this ordering is that peace which is given on earth to men of good will this is the life of whomsoever is thoroughly and perfectly wise.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is a Martyr indeed, who shed his blood for Christ's Name's sake
* Who feared not for the threats of judges, nor sought to be great with the glory of this world, but pressed on unto the kingdom of heaven.
℣. The Lord guided the righteous in right paths, and showed him the kingdom of God.
℟. Who feared not for the threats of judges, nor sought to be great with the glory of this world, but pressed on unto the kingdom of heaven.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Who feared not for the threats of judges, nor sought to be great with the glory of this world, but pressed on unto the kingdom of heaven.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum. Amen.

Lectio 9

℟. Deo grátias.

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May He that is the Angels' King to that high realm His people bring. Amen.

Reading 9
From this most peaceful and most orderly kingdom is cast forth the prince of this world, whose rule is over the contentious and disorderly. When once this peace hath been proclaimed and established within, whatsoever wars he that is without can raise, can but heap more glory upon that glory which is according to God, for nothing of the castle will yield before him, but the yielding of his own engines will witness how strong be its ramparts. And therefore cometh next Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Te Deum

During the following verse all make a profound bow: When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.

We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.
